About this product
A drill press that clamps itself to the steel, and a lift detector that stops it if the magnet lets go.
Corded, 450 rpm, 15.8 kg, drilling to 3.81 cm diameter and 5 cm deep, with a slot drive arbor, an LED pilot light and a carrying case.
A portable magnetic drill for steel fabrication, with a magnet base that holds the machine to the work instead of the other way round.
It drills up to 3.81 cm in diameter and 5 cm deep at 450 rpm, on a corded supply.
The lift detector is the safety system that matters: it responds if the magnet loses its hold, which on vertical or overhead steel is the failure that counts.
It arrives in a carrying case with feed handles, hex wrenches, cutter set screws and two safety chains.
A mag drill exists because you cannot take a beam to a pillar drill. The magnet clamps the machine to the steel, and from that point on it behaves like a small drill press wherever the steel happens to be.
450 rpm is a deliberate speed. Annular cutters take a ring of material rather than the whole hole, and they want low speed and steady feed, which is also what keeps the cutter alive.
The lift detector is the feature to understand before buying. A magnet's hold depends on the steel: thin plate, paint, rust, an uneven face or an overhead position all reduce it. The detector reacts to a loss of hold, and the safety chain is the second line when it happens anyway.
The slot drive arbor changes cutters faster and holds them more concentrically, which shows up as a rounder hole rather than as a time saving.
The LED pilot light is a small thing that gets used constantly. Placing a hole accurately inside a structure is a task done in shadow more often than not.
The maker lists the work it is for: steel fabrication, building and construction, bridge rebuilding, mining, shipbuilding, vehicle building, pipeline, offshore, welding shops, power utilities, railways and mobile repair.

What is a Magnetic Drill?
A Magnetic Drill, also known as a Portable Magnet Drill Press, is a specialized power tool used for drilling holes in metal surfaces. It is equipped with a strong electromagnetic base that adheres to the metal workpiece, providing stability and precision during drilling operations.
How do Mag Drill Bits work?
Mag drill bits work in conjunction with the magnetic drilling machine's magnetic base. The drill bit is attached to the spindle of the machine, and the magnetic base adheres firmly to the metal surface being drilled. As the drill bit rotates, it creates a hole in the metal, and the magnetic base ensures stability and prevents slippage during the drilling process.
What are the key features of a Magnetic Drill?
The key features of a Magnetic Drill include a powerful electromagnet for secure attachment, adjustable drilling speeds, a robust motor for high-performance drilling, a compact and portable design, depth stop functionality, and compatibility with a variety of drill bits and accessories.
What are the key features to consider when choosing Mag Drill Bits?
When selecting Mag Drill Bits, consider factors such as the material of the bit (usually high-speed steel or cobalt steel for increased durability), the diameter and length of the bit for the specific hole size and depth required, and the type of coating or surface treatment on the bit for better wear resistance. Additionally, ensure compatibility with the magnetic drilling machine's chuck or spindle to guarantee a secure fit and efficient drilling performance.
What types of materials can be drilled using a Magnetic Drill?
A Magnetic Drill is primarily used for drilling holes in metal materials, including steel, iron, stainless steel, and other ferrous metals. Its strong magnetic base ensures stability and accuracy even when drilling through thick or heavy metal surfaces.
What are the recommended applications for a Portable Mag Drill Bits?
A Portable Magnet Drill Bits is commonly used in various metalworking applications such as steel fabrication, construction, automotive repair, shipbuilding, and industrial maintenance. It is particularly useful in situations where drilling holes in metal surfaces is required but a traditional bench-mounted drill press is not feasible.
What are the benefits of using a Magnetic Drill?
The benefits of using a Magnetic Drill include increased drilling accuracy, improved stability during drilling operations, enhanced productivity due to efficient setup and repositioning, the ability to drill in confined or overhead spaces, and reduced reliance on bulky or stationary drilling equipment.
Why is a Portable Magnet Drill Press a valuable tool for metalworking professionals?
A Portable Magnet Drill Press is a valuable tool for metalworking professionals because it offers the flexibility to perform drilling operations on metal surfaces in various locations. Its portability, combined with the magnetic base, allows for efficient drilling in challenging or remote environments without compromising precision or stability.
How should a Magnetic Drill be maintained for optimal performance?
To maintain optimal performance, a Magnetic Drill should be regularly inspected for any signs of wear, cleaned after use to remove metal chips and debris, and lubricated according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The drill bits and accessories should also be inspected and replaced as needed to ensure accurate and efficient drilling.
Are there any safety precautions to consider when using a Portable Magnet Drill Press?
Yes, safety precautions should be followed when using a Portable Magnet Drill Press. It is important to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. Additionally, operators should carefully read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and guidelines for safe operation and ensure the work area is clear and stable before drilling.
How big a hole will it drill?
Up to 3.81 cm in diameter and 5 cm deep.
Is it cordless?
No, it is corded electric.
What is the lift detector for?
It reacts if the magnet loses its hold on the work, which is the failure that matters on vertical and overhead steel.
Are safety chains included?
Yes, two. Use them: the chain is what holds the machine when the magnet does not.
What is in the case?
The drill, feed handles and knobs, hex wrenches for the gib adjustment and cutter installation, cutter set screws, and two safety chains.
How thick does the steel need to be?
A magnet's hold depends on the thickness, the flatness and the finish of the steel. Thin, painted, rusted or uneven material all reduce it, so check the maker's minimum before setting up.
What is a slot drive arbor?
A cutter mount that changes faster and holds the cutter more concentrically, which shows up as a rounder hole.
What work is it for?
The maker lists steel fabrication, construction, bridge work, mining, shipbuilding, vehicle build, pipelines, offshore, welding shops, utilities, railways and mobile repair.
What is the item dimensions?
29.5cm x 19.7cm x 45.7cm.
What is the power source?
Corded Electric.
How much is delivery?
Delivery anywhere in the United Kingdom is £25, and it is free once your order reaches £100.
The complete guide
Setting up a magnetic drill so it stays where you put it
4 min readIndustry Tools Company UK
A mag drill is a drill press that trusts a magnet. Everything that goes wrong with one starts there.
Clean the face. Magnetic hold is made through contact, and a layer of swarf, scale, paint or rust between the magnet and the steel costs a large share of it. Wire brush the spot, not just the general area.
Check the thickness. Every mag drill has a minimum material thickness below which the magnet cannot develop full hold. Thin plate needs a backing plate underneath to make up the section.
Use the chain. Every time, not just overhead. A safety chain around the beam and through the machine is what turns a magnet failure into a jolt instead of a dropped machine.
Set the cutter and the pilot before energising. Line up the pilot pin on the centre punch, then switch the magnet on, then check that nothing has moved.
Feed steadily. Annular cutters cut a ring, and they want continuous pressure rather than pecking. Backing off part way through glazes the cutting edges, and a glazed cutter rubs and heats.
Use cutting fluid. The reservoir is there for a reason and the cutter life difference is not small.
Watch the slug. When the ring is through it comes out as a slug and it will be hot and sharp. Overhead, it drops, so nobody stands underneath.
Clear swarf from the slide as you go. Swarf in the dovetail is what makes a machine bind and then chatter, and chatter is what breaks cutters.
Ask before you order and we will tell you honestly what the manufacturer states. Free delivery across the UK on orders over £100. What we will not do is tell you a piece of protective equipment suits your hazard: that is your own assessment and the certification marked on the product.
