Check the chain, the hooks and the latches before every lift. Keep the chain clean and lightly oiled, and never shorten or repair a load chain.

0.75 tonne of lift from a hand lever, three metres of G80 chain, and a brake that will not let go.

6 mm load chain in 20MN2 alloy steel with a black oxide finish, a dual pawl brake, drop-forged latched swivel hooks and a carry bag.

A hand-powered lever hoist rated to 0.75 tonne, or 1650 lb, on a 6 mm load chain three metres long.

The chain is 20MN2 alloy steel with a black oxide finish, and the gears are heat-treated forged and milled steel in a cold rolled steel body.

The dual pawl brake is what holds the load between strokes, and it is designed to resist operation above the rated capacity.

The hooks are drop-forged with safety latches and swivel through 360 degrees, and the whole thing comes with a bag and a shoulder strap.

Manual Lever Hoist

A lever hoist is a puller as much as a lifter. It shortens a chain a link at a time under load, which is what makes it useful for dragging a machine into position as well as for lifting it.

Manual Lever Hoist

The rated capacity is 0.75 tonne. That is the working load limit, not a breaking point and not a target: the chain, the hooks and the anchor all have to be rated for the load, and the weakest of those is what you actually have.

Manual Lever Hoist

The brake is the safety-critical part. A dual pawl system holds the load between strokes and is designed to resist being operated above the rated capacity, which is the failure people try to force.

Manual Lever Hoist

Latched hooks matter more than they look. A latch keeps a sling from jumping the hook when the load swings or when the chain goes slack, and an unlatched hook is the usual cause of a dropped load.

Manual Lever Hoist

Where it earns its keep is where power does not reach. Construction sites, garages, warehouses, docks, workshops, farms and plant rooms, and anywhere the job is one lift rather than a hundred.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Using a lever hoist safely, and what to check first

4 min read Industry Tools Company UK

A lever hoist is one of the few tools that will happily lift more than you should ask it to. Everything below is about not finding out where that line is.

Start with the load. You need a real figure, not an estimate, and you need to know where its centre of gravity sits. A load that swings when it lifts was rigged off centre.

Then the anchor. The hoist is rated to 0.75 tonne and that number means nothing if the beam, eye or sling above it is rated for less. The lowest rating in the chain is what you have.

Check the load chain end to end before every lift. You are looking for stretch, nicks, gouges, corrosion and twists. Run it through your gloved hand. A chain that has been overloaded stretches, and a stretched link is a link on its way out.

Check the hooks. Both should swivel freely, both latches should close under their own spring, and neither should be opened out. A hook that has spread has been overloaded and does not go back.

Rig so the chain hangs in line with the load. A lever hoist pulled sideways loads the chain across the links rather than along them, which is the direction it is not rated for.

Never extend the lever. A cheater bar puts more force into the mechanism than it is built for, and the brake is the part that gives. If the load will not move on the standard lever, the load is too heavy.

At work in Great Britain this is lifting equipment under LOLER 1998, so it needs thorough examination by a competent person at the required intervals, and records kept. That is a legal duty rather than a suggestion.

Store it dry and hung rather than in a heap on a floor. Chain rusts where it sits in water, and the bag it comes with is there for a reason.
